Literally raced through this book, read it in one sitting - taken me just over an hour. (I speed read...) But my goodness was this book excellent! I loved the rich world building and the dystopian nature of the story. And the twist!!!! Well, it was excellent.

It is the most amazing book I’ve ever read. A mesmerizing plot, loveable characters and twists in every chapter. Truly a masterpiece. There aren’t enough words to describe it!

In the last city in the world, anyone can be the Enemy. So, when a mysterious boy washes up, the blame falls on him. Ellie is the only one who believes he is who he says he is and swears to help him prove his innocence. But will helping him cost Ellie to reveal her own secret?

My initial response to this book was how different it was. I have put off writing this review because I couldn't find words to describe what was happening and what I was feeling while reading. That said, I really enjoyed the story and how it made me think.

The plot was very well done. There was a part of me that knew what the plot twist held but it still ended up taking me by surprise! Poor Ellie. She lost everything and only wanted love, which in time made her the prey of the Enemy. I started this book in wonder of why Ellie was so hostile towards Finn but, when all was revealed, all my anger was directed towards Finn/Enemy.

I'm so glad that Anna and Seth stuck by Ellie's side no matter how bitter she became. They were such great friends and it was inspiring to think about how I could stand by my friends in their times of need. Another thing I loved about this book was it's resolution. What better way for the Enemy and evil to be defeated then by love?

Just saw that there will be a sequel coming out in early 2021 so I will definitely have to get my hands on that! Thanks to Struan Murray and all those who made this book possible. Happy Reading! :)

It is a great concept. Has a great start that quickly sets us in a strange fantasy world of steampunk and dystopian vibes with inquisitive and religious persecution, but this first volume helps to establish the world-building and the core of the story is slowed down a little. It feels like the start is slow but by the way this first book ends, we get that the world and story are more complex. I'm curious about the rest of the series. I love fantasy that is not a portal that plunges us right into a new world with new rules and this doesn't disappoint. Enemies, vessels, gods, and powers... Inquisitors chasing and truths to be unveiled.

Not as fun and lighthearted as I would expect from a Middle Grade. The plot unfolds slowly, but even though it is interesting, it isn't entertaining much. I am not sure if I would like to continue this series. There are probably better middle grades around.

Deeply strange mystical events, in a very new world that is truly NOT derivative in a way that is so fun! P=
