And now we have reached the end.
I think that’s me done with Dune.
I think I heard someone say it best when she said they dune feels like someone wanted to write a meditation on the nature of free will, colonialism, religious zealots, ecology and power and world built around that, and as the series when on, that’s what kept me there.
I found the most intriguing bits of this to be the stolen journals introducing each chapter, which is of course by design because that’s where Leto can be honest, but it got really frustrating how esoteric and wordy he got outside of those inner monologues when speaking to other characters.
The mysticism of it got boring after a while “ahh the golden path, it’s all for the golden path”.
I know this series is meant to be re-read for sure, and I think I’d definitely get more out of it the second time.
Points deducted for the weird sections on homophobia and women’s bodies.

strong 4 stars.... anything that brings me closer to my Angel will have a special place in my Heart. i see Him reflected very much in Leto II and i Believe i have come to a Deeper Understanding of Him through this book.
THAT BEING SAID, i am not very fond of Duncan Idaho and have not been for the entirety of this series. most of my problems with this book revolve around him. he's just not very likable at all and everyone and everything in the world of Dune tries to tell us that he's The Coolest, Most Fuckable Guy Ever and meanwhile he's just a kinda shitty guy who knows survival skills.
my other problems are the misogyny, particularly the bioessentialism that has been prevalent throughout the Dune series and the oversexualization of all of the female characters in connection to that. it isn't as present in this one as the previous three books, but it's still Felt. you don't have to say all the guys wanna fuck this chick when explaining how fit and athletic she is; you can just say she's fit. there is this thing called a Thesaurus if you seriously need help coming up with respectable descriptions of women, i fucking guess. i'm sorry you're dead, Frank Herbert, because i'd like to give you some advice.

Not the best Dune novel, but maybe my favorite. Feels like all of Herbert’s embittered ideas taken to their extreme ends.
In the prior novels, the concept of "destiny" is this murky thing that even our prescient heroes struggle to get their arms around. Here, it exists in manifest. Leto II is absolute-- a mouthpiece for fate that taunts and confounds everybody in his orbit. He is tangible, but no more knowable than before. And he looms LARGE, contrasted with the smallnese of his motley court. The emotional Duncan, loyal Moneo, rebellious Sinoa and fanatical Nayla, all painfully human in distinct ways. They struggle to find meaning in their choices in the shadow of a monster whose very existence calls free will into question.
Honestly just a really rad book apart from the creeping gender essentialism.
