THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN

I loved, loved, LOVED the second book in this series. I canNOT wait to start the third. To name a few of the amazing atributes this book was full of: intrigue, mystery, FEELS, dark magic, fun and deep characters, insane plot twists, gorgeous prose... I could go on.

Whoops, looks like The Daemon Prism is in my hands. How did that happen? There's no helping it; guess I better start reading it.

3.75 stars. Read for review. Need to read book 1 now!

Boy. I have gone beyond the point where I can judge Carol's books on a rational basis, so it's kind of pointless to review them, but what the heck.

If you like fantasy-intrigue, just buy all her books, okay? And she continues to improve from "pretty good" to "fantastic" and then some.

I was disappointed when I found out that this book would have a different POV character than Book 1...but I fell in love with her on Page 2. Non-issue for sure.

Read in one sitting :)

I actually read this *before* the first book in the series, so it seemed much more well thought through and elaborate than it really was. A decent magical mystery. I love who the villain ended up being (and his motives) but I wish he'd been more of a character throughout.

the narration shifted to anne, daughter of the nominal villain of previous book, which was a bit jarring, since at the beginning anne - a severely introverted, reserved, intelligent but naive woman - possesses all the survival and political instincts of a particularly depressed suicidal lemming, and also doesn't talk to anybody useful; but she's made it through, came into himself and started asking right questions and making right decisions, and so i'm liking her a lot. mid-book, will see how it plays out.

much, much happier with the second half of the book than with the first. anne grows into herselfs, kicks some serious ass and calls some unpleasant names and in general learns to do what's needed to do and to want what she wants to want, and i loved her a whole lot by the end. also in: dreadful magic! ilario keeps rocking on! ritual sacrifices are all the rage! eugenie survives two books full of bullshit! portier continues to be my shining light of sanity and loveliness and possible saintliness. dante continues to be a dick (news at eleven).

The sort of telepathic relationship building between two characters is utterly gorgeous.
