I really loved this one too. The whole Eric/Sookie/Bill love triangle seems to finally be on it's way to being resolved. Plus there was a lot of action/drama. And some sadness. It was really good and I'm anxiously anticipating the newest book being released in May 2010.

Let it be known...I loved all the prior 8 Sookie books!
They are a fun, easy and quick read books. Sookie is a magnet for danger and mishaps. I would not rate her as the most intelligent chick out there but she is not stupid. She does a fairly decent job protecting herself although she does need assistance out of tight spots that she gets into. The thing I like about her is that she does not shriek back from dangerous situations. She is not a wimp at heart. Let me also say, the romance in these books can be steamy...yep steamy. That is another entertaining element.

Dead and Gone delivered in the danger elements and it gave us the romance element as well. What Dead and Gone did not do for me is make a connection with Sookie. Gosh...I felt as if we were wandering around as Sookie wanders. She wanders around trying to solve a murder, trying to keep herself from getting killed and she wanders around with whom she can speak with but she does not speak much with the one I have been waiting for her to speak with! Even though there is a great danger element it fell flat. The plot felt fragmented to me...the detail was missing as compared to the other novels.

I don't like this book (which sees Paretsky's main character go back to her old high school to coach basketball and become involved in a dispute between a contractor and a Wal-Martesque company) for a number of reasons. First, the lead character leaves me cold. Everyone seems to rave about the character, but I can't bring myself to like her.

My irritation may have something to do with the fact that most people call her by the surname. It automatically puts a distance between me and her, a distance I didn't particularly like. This seems to be a common trait of the Washawski character, because I read another book by Paretsky 3 or 4 years ago and had the same problems.

Secondly, I got irritated by the lengths she went to to make it obvious that the retailer in the book wasn't Wal-Mart (going so far as to say so at one point). This just tended to get me thinking about Wal-Mart too much, and that's something that just flat out irritates me.

At the moment I'm conducting a one person campaign against Wal-Mart. I refuse to shop there because of the impact they're having on the American economy, so spending a lot of time reading a book that uses their economic model as a template just felt like a waste of time after a while.

Finally, I might have read to many detective novels, but I knew who was involved in the murder from the first time we met them, while kind of defeats the object of a whodunnit.

I read this entire book in one day! I loved it! It was a reincarnation of the excitement and joy of the first book that I read by Charlaine Harris! All of her other books have been good but this one hit a new all time high.

There is plenty of action, adventure, and mystery in this 9th installment. Plus we get a bonus of getting to know the characters in a deeper and more complex way. All and all, an A+. I loved this book and can't wait for the next one to come out! :)
