I loved the Goblin Emperor, but it had the limitation of any court fantasy of really being only about very rich people, no matter what twists it took. This book takes us deeper into the world, which feels real enough to walk into, and the characters that inhabit it are deft and subtle and ultimately oddly sweet, even if they're occasionally jerks. The pacing is a bit halting and odd, with less of an intricate tapestry of a mystery emerging and more of a tangled web, but that suits the mood.

this is marketed as a stand alone, but it doesn't really feel that way. much more magic than the first book.

Significantly different than The Goblin Emperor, but still a delight. A cozy mystery with everyone's favorite grieving priest who can talk to the dead. There's so many mysteries to solve and Celehar is just great and kind and I love him.

It's also nice to see this world from the ground-level. The Goblin of the Emperor (which I think I liked a bit more than this, but they're both gold-star books) is so far above the day to day of this world. This just gives you the insight of everyday goblins and elves and industrial accidents and petty rivalries and teahouses and whatnot. It's just a fun extension of the world building.

I know this is an odd thing to say, but I appreciated that Celehar was busy. Like, he wasn't just a detective on one case. He had a lot of things on his to do list and was tired and exhausted. I feel like it felt like a job (a job that he clearly loved but still a job) more so than most jobs that people work in fiction. Wonderful.
