Solid technically-a-sequel to The Goblin Emperor. Didn't hit me quite as right as that one, but I enjoyed it a lot. Same world, not completely separate cast, but total change of focus. Ending is a bit abrupt and I'd have liked some more of the politics.

I found this one really benefitted from immersive reading due to all the names - if you've read Goblin Emperor you'll know what I'm on about.

Plot-wise I was surprised, this was very much a fantasy version of a mystery/crime novel, which was not an unwelcome surprise! I'm very intrigued to see what she does with book two - I really want to see more of Celehar
and PT
.

A mesh of fantasy and mystery is a meeting I never knew I needed.

Another excellent book by Katherine Addison. This companion to The Goblin Emperor was a little less dense, but with more intrigue of the murder-mystery sort which I really enjoyed. Celehar is a far more intriguing character here than he was in The Goblin Emperor, and far more sympathetic. His skill at speaking to the dead is certainly a handy one to have for an accidental detective (although he would never admit to being a detective - he would just say he was following his calling), but it is his unprepossessing manner, his calm-in-the-storm character, that really works in his favour. I’m looking forward to reading the next book and getting to know him even better.
