Maybe it’s not fair to rate so low for something that differed from my own grief process but the incessant thoughts Amora had after loosing her father made making it through this book a challenge. I understand she is grieving, I also understand that her grief is complicated due to stress and the way she lost her father. I didn’t expect her to just get over it or anything like that but I didn’t expect her characterization to take such a hit either. I loved her and her hardheaded determination in the first book, I loved how sure she was because she knew what was right. Her compass in this book was completely lost and due to that she became someone I didn’t like at all. 75% of the way though I kept hoping I’d love her again…but I just couldn’t. By the end, though I feel the story is complete and ran its course in the best way it could considering everything that happened, I still didn’t love Amora like I did in the first one. **Mild
I guess I felt burned in the way Vataea did. I don’t hate Amora but she no longer resonated with me as she did in the first book.
**

That aside, I yearn for the adventures that the characters are going to go on! To see the way Visidia grows! I would have loved to see more of the islands, magics, and lore but I think that’s always the case when world building is a solid, well thought out, and loved beast! I’m glad I read this duology but hands down the first one was my favorite! I appreciate that the author took the time and cared enough  to show Amora’s grieving process, but I didn’t particularly enjoy the ride. I did however, get choked up upon the resolution of her grief and the “magical fix it” that presented itself. I’d recommend! …so maybe I’ll return soon and increase my rating… because the frustration is probably only temporary due to my immersion in the story and characters.

This was much darker than I am usually comfortable with, and until the last 75% I was annoyed with the writing. But something beautiful happened in the last 100 pages when it all fits together, and you felt like you were there, which for me was the first time I just fell into the book. It was very emotional for me, and I cannot remember a time when I laughed and deeply sobbed at the same time, never mind from a book! I will let both ideas be food for thought, but I cannot recommend this book to someone who hates slow character development or overcoming their struggles.

better than the previous book, in this sequel we get to explore more of the islands and the types of magic which was something i really enjoyed, however i found the main character and the narration very irritating at times.

Overall, a fine production that'll serve to get you through the story. As with most fantasy books, I always find it handy to have an audio pronouncing the foreign words, and this time is no different. No huge changes in the text, just a word added or dropped a couple times, probably in service to the flow. Still wish there were musical bits when its relevant to the story (like humming a shanty), but it's more uncommon to have them than not. So, maybe not one to hold up as a shining example of all that audiobooks could be, but a serviceable production that gets the job done and concludes the duology well.
