Once again, this book is carried by the side characters who are infinitely more interesting and competent than Rand. Mat particularly shined this time around when he became a battle commander. He still has me humming Jak o the shadows all day at work. The introduction of Brigitte into the hulk of the narrative too was a feat of genius.
My main problems with this book was the fact that the second half seems to be loaded with every important plot point while the first half is just filler. Also Rand is horrible. I hate him with a fiery passion. He is a misogynist, stupid and gets people killed in an effort to preserve his own “moral high ground”. He read like a petulant child throwing a tantrum because he didn’t get his way. At this point I’m rooting for him to die so Perrin and Mat can take over. Maybe with them the world will ACTUALLY get saved.

a LOT happens in this book, so much to the point where you'd almost forgive Robert Jordan for leaving Perrin out of it. :P It's hard to follow The Shadow Rising, but ultimately there are consequences for what happened there.

Siuan must learn how to deal with her new circumstances, and fiercely fight to preserve the Aes Sedai order.

Rand reluctantly accepts being the Car'a'carn while batting away seeping thoughts that don't seem to be his.

Nynaeve and Elayne move across the map, but learn some humility (a smidge) as well as what can be done in Tel'aran'rhiod.

Mat also deals with memories he doesn't recognize and some unexpected strategic skills.

Finishing this up after finishing Dune makes the Fremen-Aiel parallels a little more obvious.
