A perfect history book, in that it reads as prose, is extraordinarily researched, and in my opinion thoroughly conveys the larger-than-life character of Simon Bolivar. I was getting a bit confused about who all the generals were but I think this is more so an issue on my end.

Extraordinarily well written. A full and captivating account of the enigmatic general, neither propping him up as a hero's hero nor denigrating him for his faults (of which there are many). Compelling prose and well portioned chapters--very very good.

I knew shamefully little about South American history prior to reading this book. It's made a good start on curing my ignorance. Bolivar's an interesting personality, with a fascinating history. While some of the military exploits couldn't completely hold me interest (not really a fault of the book - jsut how I am), I enjoyed reading about his involvement in freeing the several nations from European dominance.

Enthralling, a vivid picture of Bolivar’s life and achievements and written in such a way that I, a person with no prior knowledge of Bolivar, could easily understand and enjoy the text.
Would recommend to anyone interested in South American history.
