Oh MAN this was an awesome book. The prose was gorgeous and flowing, the stories went together perfectly it was so refreshing to read an emotional, well thought out short story cycle where each story had a different voice. Wonderful, wonderful

I’d give this book 4.5 stars if I could. This is another book from my book club that I never would have heard about if it weren’t for someone else suggesting it.

I really liked it and appreciated the complex characters and relationships. This book made me think a lot about getting to change the narrative on your own life and who really deserves a chance to do that. I really wanted to hate the dee breaker character but couldn’t.

I struggled to follow how some of the characters fit into the larger story and would have appreciated a character map. Other than that I thoroughly appreciated this book and would recommend it.

Depressing? Yes. But still it's so worth the read.

Simple. Heart breaking. Yes.

Danticat set out to write a devastating collection of stories about what it means to be a Haitian American and boy did she deliver. Her language is simple which only brings out the heaviness of this topic even more. It's pretty damn obvious that she was a poet before she set down to write a book.

"Night Talkers" and "Dew Breaker" made me sigh out loud in a content with a good book/my heart is on fire way.

Some of her stories are leaps and bounds superior to others, but Danticat ends on such a wrenching note that you cannot help but walk away affected.

Try this book. It's a quick read and can be read in fragments due to its short story nature.

The fact that all the characters are tied together? So good. Like reading the screenplay for "Crash," no joke.

Edwidge Danticat frequently makes a theme of the atrocities that occurred in Haiti in its tumultuous history. The Dew Breaker is no exception with this collection of stories that all connect to a torturer, a dew breaker. Even with this connection, Danticat tells very different stories about very different people who all share the trauma of the regime change that scarred Haiti. She makes you feel as if you are there, sharing a world that connects Bel Air, New York and Miami. A short but powerful read, The Dew Breaker is poignant but realistic, not passing judgment on the array of characters who share a common trauma.
