I would give it a 2.5, but it's not the book's fault I had just finished another gothic mystery and I didn't always pay attention because it was audio.
A little bit silly and rushed at the ending, but everything else was great, if you're a goth novel fan. Really involving for most of the book, and really makes you worry about the main character.
Had an intense and fast read of this book. I enjoyed both of Harwood's previous books and I definitely have a thing for gothic novels. This, like his others, is Gothic in its strictest sense. Set in the late 1800's, involving madness and an asylum, questions of the supernatural, identity and doubles and twists and turns, so much going on.
This reminded me a lot of one of my favorite books: FINGERSMITH by Sarah Waters. While it has a different setting, they both have strong narrators and lots of twists. I enjoyed the piecing together of the puzzle, really masterfully done. Enough little nibbles of clues and gradually spilling larger pieces of information to let you wonder and also give you what you need when you can't wait anymore.
