I couldn’t put this book down. It was full of so many unexpected things, every time I thought I was finished for the night, I start another chapter.

Reading this book felt like eternity. I always anticipate something to happen in every chapter but there were none. Got quite impatient with the flow of events that I end up passing sight to the paragraphs without actually understanding them.

This is the second time (and unfortunately the last) that I will engage myself in this book.

I tried -I really did- but the last 30-40 pages have been a struggle and I can't bear the thought of having to spend another hour or two of my time finishing it. The characters and relationships are shallow and flat, and the plot ... what plot, other than Twilight-esque lovesick fawning? I can't.

Really thought this was going to be a fantasy about like a witch coven or something. I well and truly do not care about some edgy teenagers

I was really tempted to give this a 3 star rating, but the ending and the fact that I think writing a book with a character like this takes guts, I ended up giving it a 4.

The beginning was good, giving just enough information to keep you guessing. The ending was the best for me, however considering the middle part of the book might have been a bit dry because of it, it might have been a bit too packed with everyting.
I REALLY did not like the main character and i think many people have trouble with this book because of that. She seemed a bit superficial and inconsistent to me as a reader and her character all in all....ugh. But i don't neccessarily dislike reading books with characters that i don't like, it makes in intriguing. And I guess the main character was written so well I was expecting something to happen with Summer when it was actually Fenrin all along

"Power is everyone's goal, isn't it?"

Hey guys, so I finished The Graces (The Graces, #1) by Laure Eve and well....it just wasnt for me. I thought it was, i thought the premise sounded cool, but it just wasnt a story I really felt invested in. It is basically just a story about a girl who desperately wants to fit in with the "cool kids" at her school, in her town. She is so desperate to be with them, be like them, to be loved by them, that she is willing to do anything to obtain that. She is willingly to nearly sell her soul to obtain power via the Graces. It honestly made me sick, how much and how far the main character was willing to go to be with the Graces. SHe didn't care about or acknowledge the danger or anything, only the glamour and fame and fortune. She did everything she could to be in their good graces, whether it was lie, tell the truth, be real, be fake, whatever it was. She changed everything she was and everything she could be for someone else. It was the very opposite of what we are usually taught in YA books, to be unique, ourselves, be true to who we are and don't let anyone else change who you are for the sake of anything else. So yeah...I disliked the main character. Even with semi understanding the motives/intentions behind her actions, i still didn't warm to her. So yeah, that's my opinion, take it or leave it. And that is basically the so called "plot", her trying to be with the graces through any means possible, with only a few minor speed bumps along the way. Even those few obstacles didn't really amount to much, in my opinion. I honestly thought her actions were have dire consequences, and that she would LEARN from them, to be better than she was. Yeah. What was I thinking? Okay, the other main characters, the Graces, Fen, Thalia, and SUmmer, i didn't reallly feel much for them either. Well, maybe only a tiny bit for Fen, but it was barely there. I don't know, they all just seemed so flat and like pieces in the story to chug it along. They obviously contributed to the story, but i didn't really feel like they were characters in the story. Maybe it was because everything was so superficial and shallow, it didn't really have much heart or depth to it. This story lacked deepness. Sure, it had darkness. But that wasn't enough, in my opinion. SO yeah...even the so called drama from the story was just kinda a lift in the plot then it went back down as quickly as it rose. Nothing really stuck. And the writing...it was so strange. One second it is full of useless details like what a hcaracter is wearing then it would swing to sparse conversations with no details surrounding inner monologue at all. This made for a light yet bit irritating read in my opinion, because i would much rather know what a character thinks about another characters actions, rather than whether a characters feet were bare or not. And any action or danger, it was so quick it was hard to believe it even happened. Maybe the author didn't want to drag anything on, but some scenes could have used dragging on. BUt, whatever. Honestly, two of the only interesting things about this book revovled around the two side characters, Wolf and Marcus. I was more curious as to how they would aid the story, as compared to the actual story. And the ending, that was just weird as hell. I sensed some sort of unleashing of true nature, but i am not sure. Then again, i wasnt really paying that much attention, so whatever. But still, it was really weird. All the characters acted weird and strange, apart from their usual weirdness. So yeah, all of them did like a 180 on their so far character development, as if there was any, and just slipped. I swear....Anyway...i can't tell you why i continued to push on with this story. It was like a cracked up on meth hybrid between twilight and the vampire diaries. Except with witches and the cullens were actually a happy family, as compared to the Graces. And sadly, there was no hot werewolf/vampire love triangle. There was no love triangle at-well...Maybe there was one, kinda. Slimly. It was just weird, and i wouldn't call the main characters "love" with the main dude anything of romance. It was just...and the only romance mentioned was towards the end, to explain some things, which was totally cool and chill. BUt other than that, no actual romance. Only endless and childish thoughts of the main characters inclined to romance. Seriously, she was just so petty and childish. SO i don't really know why I didn't stop this story. But then again, i hate to not finish what i start. SO i did. ON a positive note, this book, i mean it had potential. The concepts and actions within it could have made for a good story. Especially the magic complex and the relationship dynamic. That could have been played up and twisted up more. Maybe it did. BUt just not in my eyes. Alright, i prattled long enough. This is all my opinion, if you want your own read the book. Till next time. Bye.

This book was a bit oversold in my opinion. It does in fact have amazing description and prose. I give the author major props for being able to write something that feels like small town, gothic magic contained in pages.

It's the characters and dialogue that makes it feel a little flat. River, the main character, is the archetype "I'm different" girl that falls in with the popular kids, the Graces. River has bitter, cynical attitude towards life that could be endearing if she was funny or awkward. She tries to be but it comes off as robotic and she's just downright a jerk at times in the way she acts. The Graces are their own archetypes, first is the goth rebel, the second is the golden jock, and the third is the nature flower child. If they weren't so all molded into these characters and instead had an ebb and flow in personality and style that mixed, but was still distinguished it would have been better. It's also just really unrealistic to think that three siblings are such vastly different people, which nothing in common.

The book itself has the vibe of being a modern take on The Craft. I think, in that sense, it makes the problems of the book a little bit more understandable. The Craft is pretty ridiculous in itself with outrageously larger than life personalities. It makes sense that if this book is drawing inspiration from it, that it follows in that dramatic sense.

Overall, I love a witch book and think that this was a fun read that I may or may no follow through on the sequel with. I just wish it had been less vague and more forthcoming about itself. I'm also not fond of the way the last chapter ends.
