Thank you Little Neighborhood Free Library Box for this sweet little treasure that helped me through the last bit of winter. I enjoyed this thoroughly and look forward to reading it again! Quietly philosophical and poetic as hell. Absolutely delightful for the cold and dreadful months.
sad and funny and lovely and scary. tove's beautiful illustrations combined with the simple story of Moomintroll waking up while his family hibernates make for a children's book on a deeper level than most (especially given its hard-fantasy setting). i finished it on the train home and cried a little bit, but in a nice way.
my absolute favorite of the Moomin books. This time I read it entirely in the summer house, which has emerged triumphant in winter in much the same way Too Ticky takes over the Bathing Hut in the book.

Too Ticky is the character I would most like to be... I suppose Little My is my favorite, but I would rather actually model myself on Too Ticky. And I want a red winter hat that I can turn inside out when it's spring and it will become sky blue.

This is a very cute book (story and art both) about what happens when Moomintroll (our main character) wakes up in the middle of hibernating and is unable to fall back asleep. He's young, but manages to look after the house and his sleeping family, make new friends, and take care of other lonely and strange beings through the winter.
I really enjoyed this as my first experience with the Moomins. I'm planning to read more, and I'm curious what I'll think of those compared to this one, since I've heard this is one of the more (if not the most) dark of the Moomin books. (With nothing to compare to, though, I didn't find this dark at all—at least, no darker than any book about winter would be.)

Taianomainen ja herkkä. Tässä oli aivan ihania oivalluksia tunteista, yksinäisyydestä ja maailman suuruudesta. Vaikka toiset nukkuvat talviunta, elämä jatkuu tavalliseen tapaansa, eikä yksi muumipeikko eikä mikään muukaan olento voi ikinä tietää kaikkea maailmasta - mutta enemmän voi silti oppia!
Yksinäiset olennot, jotka uskaltavat esiin vain talvella. Pelottavat luonnonilmiöt. Kaikkeen sopeutuva Pikku Myy. Pelokas Muumipeikko, joka oppii pitämään muutoksesta.
Luonto elää oma symbioottista kulkuaan. Uimahuone kuuluu kesällä Muumeille, mutta talvella se on Tuu-tikin ja päästäisten. Kirja on täynnä symboliikkaa.
Lohduttava, alkuun melankolinen mutta loppu on yhtä riehakas kuin kevät.
