I think this is pretty much a perfect book. I’ve read it many many times over perhaps 50 years. Moomintroll finds himself in the strange and incomprehensible world of winter, fights and struggles with it and resents everything about it, until finally he makes his peace with it. What brought me to this re-read was having just finished Katherine May’s book Wintering. Moominland Midwinter covers almost exactly the same ground, just in a completely different way. The books complement each other entirely. However, I do think that May should have given more acknowledgment to this in her own book. Everything is there - the equivalent of the unsympathetic characters, like the Hemulen, the aurora, the cold water swimming, the loneliness and the having to find one’s own way of coming to terms with it all. Lovely, lovely book. Only incidentally for children.
