This is by far the most different book of all the Moomin series; it feels so different, not only in Tove's writing but in the themes and Moomintroll himself.
How moomintroll feels and how winter is described makes so much sense if you know what was happening in Tove's life, with all the moomins becoming incredibly merchantilized and stuff, and also how she just wanted to rest.
shoutout to Too-ticky, please; she is SO underrated as a character.

Some people have complained that Moomin is too whiny and negative about winter. But I think you can't really understand that feeling if you have never experienced Scandinavian winter. Especially for a little Moomintroll, who only knows summery sun and warmth, it must be hard to wake up in an entirely different world, cold and dark, alone. But eventually he finds many special creatures and people who have been hidden during summer. And he experiences so much that no Moomintroll has ever seen before. It's a really cute and wholesome story with quite a few deep and philosophical ideas about life. I love this and I'm looking forward to readin more Moomin books in the future
