Okay, where to start?

My knowledge of Supergirl is limited to the TV show starring Kara Danvers and her appearance in the 2009 (i think?) Superman/Batman series. There, I think her name was also Kara? So, this whole thing was confusing.

Supergirl is Mae who is...? Matrix? I wiki’ed it and that wasn’t super helpful. Anyway, Supergirl merges with Linda Danvers, a former cult leader and Linda tries to redeem herself through being Supergirl. As a plot line, that’s semi interesting. However, it didn’t make it any less confusing.

Her superpowers were interesting? Shapeshifting, TK, flight and superstrength. The plot lines (for the most part) were pretty interesting. That’s about where this stops for me.

I wasn’t super intrigued by Linda as a character and I’m not sure why Matrix was a complete non character for most of this. The cast of characters are all pretty one note. Matty’s dialogue was painful. I wasn’t sure why Mr. Danvers was a dick. Mrs. Danvers was painfully annoying. There was too much of the reporter I didn’t care about and wayyyy too much of the demon guy. I understand he was the main villain but I felt like there was too much focus and he was never as intimidating as Peter David wanted him to be.

Now, the worst part of this series was the short one shot issue with Mary Marvel. It was fucking tone deaf. Spoilers past this point:

Spoiler tw: sexual assault

Mary Marvel can’t tell her parents that she’s been sneaking out to help Billy Batson so they try to institute curfew or something. I’m not sure exactly how old this kid is but I guess 13 or something. She runs away because she’s mad and ends up in Leesburg, where Supergirl is.

Linda and Matty see her on a bus bench and talk to her, because apparently she never learned not to talk to strangers. They decide to take her to a mall and a cop approaches her, allegedly because he thought she was a shoplifter.

What follows is Captain Marvel (i think that’s her name) attacking the cop because he touched a young girl inappropriately. This encounter is drawn very lecherously for no reason at all and it makes the whole thing seem like a joke. The cop, of course, says he did no such thing and Supergirl seems to side with the cop until she finds out Capt Marvel was the one assaulted and even then, I’m not sure that Supergirl believed her.

The really problematic aspect of this story arc is that a teenage girl accused a grown man of molesting her and abusing his badge to get away with it. Why would she make that up? In true gross fashion, when men write these storylines, too much sympathy is given to the accused and not the accusers. There’s a shot of the cop crying because apparently he didn’t realize he was being a creeper and who. the. fuck. cares?

The story ends with Mary returning home and I’m not sure what the fuck was learned here? Don’t run away from home, kids. Police will assault you? Don’t run away because the world is unsafe?

I’m not sure what I was supposed to have learned hut I’ll tell you what I took out of it: Supergirl is a fucking terrible superheroine.

So, once again, we have a comic that I think would’ve been better executed had a woman written it. I find it hard to believe a female writer (aside from Devin Grayson) would write such a tone deaf issue and I think Linda would’ve been a more interesting, well fleshed out character.

So, this is not a recommend from me. This is actually the only Supergirl solo I’ve read and it doesn’t encourage me to read more, unfortunately.

This actually contained a story about Mary Marvel stating that a police officer attempted to molest her while in her teenage form and Supergirl and others don't believe her because the cop is a "good guy". And that's pretty much how they leave it, making a young girl question her reality and experience. The rest of the book isn't much better. The whole Linda Danvers storyline is about a woman being manipulated by a man to commit horrible crimes.

I'm a bit biased towards this version of Supergirl. This is what I read when I was in middle and high school. It's a much darker version of Supergirl than most people are used to, and I can see how it would be off-putting to some. It's definitely not for children, and in retrospect I was probably too young for it in middle school.

That being said, I love this Supegirl era. Watching Supergirl war with herself and learn about her own humanity is fascinating.

CRIMINALLY SLEPT ON RUN. Supergirl by Peter David is one of the all time GOATS and I refuse to hear otherwise. By far the best written Supergirl title because of its unique pitch and sharp focus on character. This is not the Supergirl you know, but give Linda Danvers a chance and you’ll quickly become invested in her learning to do the same. A powerful meditation on religion and redemption mixed with excellent supporting characters and really funny moments.

I have very little knowledge about supergirl but what little knowledge I did have I was basically told I was wrong in knowing that in this graphic novel and it just didn’t make me like it. Not continuing with the series

This book is a mess. The Christian overtones never make sense to the world we are dropped into, the writing is incoherent and made me wonder at times if there were missing pages from my edition to the point that I would do page counts of several issues. As bad as the main issues were the "Legends of a Dead Earth" stories that conclude this collection are even worse with genuinely ugly art and reductive story telling.
