The stories are not very interesting. In general there is very little story and drama in the tales. More of a recounting of things that doesn't really make sense. The bar for entertainment was much different then.
*technically* I didn't read all of this one... but I read several of the fairy tales and will definitely continue to come back and read them as I read fairy tale retellings and mash-ups! This is such a beautiful edition of a thorough and amazing collection!!

The stories are great. The inclusion of art from legendary illustrators is wonderful. The annotations and essays are illuminating.
I always have a tough time reading annotated editions that put the notes in the margins alongside the main story. I keep interrupting my own reading to see what the notes are. And Maria Tatar's intros to each story are especially hard since they're filled with spoilers. As a first time reader of many of these tales, I had to figure out a different way to read the book.
Eventually I decided that I'd enjoy it most if I skipped the intros and annotations until after I'd read the fairy tale, then go back and read Tatar's thoughts on them. That worked great, but it involved a lot of skipping around and flipping pages that I'd rather not have had to do.
