I suspect there's a lot of allegory in this book that I'm not catching, but in the meantime Wolfe's strange blend of old/new/made up language is way more compelling than I would have guessed.
Also, it's super rare that I read a series past the first or second book, but I'm definitely going to continue with the second half of the tetralogy.

Very interesting book but felt hard to follow. Many times I felt very confused. Sometimes very slow and a bit does not greatly dwell into the world in the first book which is a medieval civilisation that’s reverted from a greatly advanced scientific species. May continue to be expansive and worth it if you follow the series to the end.
Exceptionally crazy and imaginative work. My head hurts.
This is a very dense, very confusing book(s) at times. At the time of writing this review I am almost finished with the 5th book in the series, and I definitely think this is a series that makes a better whole than the sum of its parts.
The series in its full form, would almost certainly get 5 stars from me. But I almost didn't bother reading past Shadow. There's not much structure here, tangents in the 1st book don't make sense until the 5th, and while it has ultimately been worth it, it's a lot of reading time that not everyone is going to want to commit to.
