Extremely nostalgiac and captures the pains of growing up well, the last 200 pages really propel this into being a 4 for me
Would be 3.5, not quite 4. A little long and slow, especially at the beginning.

Paul Murray masterfully blurs the lines of adulthood and youth. The contradictions within and between the characters lend this work a bit of an edge. Each character, main or otherwise, brings their own unique style and perspective to the work, which the reader can immediately notice. Perhaps what is most beautiful about this novel is its dreamy, incadescent tones working in contrast to the gritty and harsh reality of growing up in any place that is at once home and a battleground. While a bit on the long side, this piece is certainly worth the effort.
Funny, charming, heartfelt, and cleverly crafted. It talks a lot about String Theory, oddly, but uses it as a concept of how people are bound together by these invisible strings. And yet sometimes these strings were so invisible I wasn't sure why it was bothering. Still, enjoyable read from head to toe.

Booker Prize listed I simply couldn't see why. Bog standard kids at school going through teething pains of growing up. The opening and the title tell you that the MC dies in the end, so there is no tension throughout. We're reading about a dead person and not someone who has had a full life of achievement or grace or gravitas, but a snot nosed kid with an unrequited crush. It's well written, has a few laughs but really not much more than that. Nor could I see why it came packaged as a box set of three slim volumes. Skippy Dies. Yeah, so what. I didn't shed a tear. Except to mourn my own investment in reading this to the bitter end.
