Not something I usually read so was excited to try something new. I was really enjoying the first few chapters as it seemed like this book was going to be extremely emotional and hard hitting - and who doesn’t love traumatising themselves to confirm that they do in fact feel something? But it seemed like the really emotional parts of the story were glossed over a bit.

Once I realised that Mohammed was just a figure of his imagination, I really struggled to connect with any new characters mentioned as I was always trying to figure out if they were real or not.

Reminded me in many ways of American Dirt. Heartbreaking book - difficult to put down.

"Name - my beautiful boy
Cause of death - this broken world"

Oh em gee, I have just had my heart ripped out. I think I cried throughout most of this profound read. Honestly, Lefteri is sharing words that matter; words that should make us think about global events, global crisis, and the humans who are destroyed in the wake of civil unrest and war.

This is the story of Ibrahim, a beekeeper in Aleppo, and his artist wife, Afra. Their lives are torn apart by the civil war in their homeland of Syria . This is the harrowing story of their escape to England. Told in two switching time scales, the true atrocities of their journey and how they begun had a profound effect on me. I have a lump in my throat thinking about it now. This may be fictional, but this story is real. This is the stories of millions of refugees who escape their homelands to try find somewhere new to call home.

This profound narrative made me think about the privileged life I live. How my children complain about dead ipads and refuse to eat meals when they are being fussy. This book has opened conversations for me to have with other people, including the little spoiled people I am growing.

Please read this book.

I received an ARC of The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri. This book is about a married couple, Nuri and Afra, who have lost their young child to the war in Syria and decide to flee to England. This book is told in two timelines, the present where they are living in England, applying for asylum, and the past journey of leaving Syria and all the hardships they faced. This novel examines the difficulties of fleeing a war-torn country and really gives refugees a voice. This story helps people in safe countries understand more about why refugees want to come to a new country--even with all the problems that arise.

This story was heartbreaking; examining PTSD and grief in a really palpable way. I really grew attached to the characters and wanted so badly for everything to work out. I will say the only thing I wish was different was it didn't include much background info about Syria or their civil war. I didn't know much about it and had to Google for some answers on reasons behind the fighting. I gave this book 4 stars.

This book will be published on August 27, 2019 and I encourage you to pick it up.
