Felt like it was lacking some depth but I was looking for something fluffy so it fulfilled that just fine. I like that there is a darker element to a dating sim world that should keep things interesting.

C'etait super drôle
this book got significantly better when I realized I shouldn't take it even a little bit seriously. the in universe politics are absolutely bonkers and we gotta love our single minded main character for being perfectly willing to be a class traitor for a pretty face.
there was a surprisingly good discussion of lgbtq media and stereotypes in here though. you just gotta get past all of the main character's dubious-at-best behavior towards the love interest to get there.

I just want to address the way others are talking about the incest: it's incidental and y'all need to grow up. This book isn't a morality play, so if it doesn't condemn something like class politics or incest, or if it doesn't address the age difference, that doesnt make it immoral. I'm so tired of people letting these things overshadow what makes a good book.
That's said, I'm not sure this is a good book. I found the main characters annoying. Claire is very Tsundere and I bet her growth is fun to watch, and Rae's declarations of love were amusing if tedious.
The bonus chapter gives some insight into how Rae might be finally wearing Claire down, and the way Claire keeps hitting points that normally a prince from the original otome would did indicate that Claire's feelings are secretly developing toward Rae...
But I suspect that either Japanese light novels are not for me or I should try again with a different light novel. I wanted to give it a shot because I was enjoying Mo Dao Zu Shi which is basically a Chinese light novel... Anyway, I'll try another series. I'm just disappointed in the lack of yuri light novels that have been translated thus far. And this one is so popular so there has to be something here!
But maybe its just not for me.

Minor: Incest
The incest bit was... something. Also the conversations between Claire and Rae were a bit repetitive, I'll continue reading the series but I sure hope there will be more character development.
She would torment me, and I would dote on her. It was a win-win situation.
2.5 stars. This was very silly, but enjoyable if you're willing to turn your brain off and sink into the genre conventions and make your peace with the paucity of the world-building. Rei is transported into her favourite dating sim, (how? none of our business I guess) a game that she loves mostly because of the main villainess, Claire. What follows is a romp full of unrequited love (?), comedy (?) and class politics, sorta. Unless there's something that I've forgotten, this is the first light novel that I've read, and the writing style took me a while to get used to. Lots of dialogue interspersed with lots of exposition. It felt like reading a manga without the visual aid of illustrations. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have finished this without the audiobook. And the content is kind of obnoxious; Rei is content to be Claire's verbal punching bag, and meanwhile confesses her love every two seconds. The overall plot could have been more interesting, because I'm always up for revolution and questions of class, but Rei is genuinely like, "I guess the commoners have a point... but I'm more interested in my love interest, sorry!" There's a very unnecessary surprise incest plot with side characters that made me ???
Listened to the audiobook as read by Courtney Shaw, which helped get me through this and did make the humour stand out more. Got to admit, this did make me chuckle, particularly with Rei's blitheness in the face of... everything. I did have enough fun with this that I'm willing to continue the series, especially since it ended in a place where I feel like, idk, maybe there'll be some positive development soon.
