As much as I love more Vernestra content, I just couldn’t get hooked on this book like I have others in THR so far. It took me about two months to finish, and I even stopped to read other books in the middle because it couldn’t hold my attention. I may have to re-read in the future because so many of the reviews are SO positive!

Favorite quote from Out of the Shadows by Justina Ireland:

"I felt the same way about them when we were on Tiikae. Good people, but maybe a little... detached from the struggles of the frontier. I can tell you that the Jedi are very, very bad at change. At adapting to the world around them. Jedi are brave and determined and heroic, but none of that amounts to a week of rations without the ability to perceive the truth of the galaxy around you. Their Force might lead them to a larger truth, and I'm glad they're standing with the Republic against the Nihil, but they just aren't like us."

"What are you saying?" Syl asked.

"I think that maybe they cut themselves off from too much of life, so that the things they fight for are ideas, not people. It's not a bad thing. I guess that must just be how it is when you see all of the galaxy and its secrets laid out before you in distinct degrees of good and bad." (Spoken by Jordanna Sparkburn on pg. 300)

This one was a bit hard to get in to for me but I enjoyed this story the most when it was from the perspective of Syl.

It’s rare we get to see a story from person that’s so much like the reader. I loved Syl’s thought process, especially when it came to the Jedi, who were such a treat to read about.

Maybe my biggest mistake was that I sort of put this book aside to focus on another and when I came back (on and off) I was slightly confused about what was happening. Maybe not just slightly. After a while I just decided to go with it but it caused that I had no idea what was going on. I was just vibing and that was it. I've read the majority of the book in the span of three days I guess (which is a lot but I didn't have that much time to read) and I can't say it was that bad. I liked the characters, though once again I could not really relate to them which I found as a reoccuring problem with this High Republic series. This book mostly focuses on Sylvestri and Vernestra (and also Reath a little, in the beginning). I liked Vernestra. I did not like Sylvestri (for some reason she was very unlikable to me). And the characters - there wasn't that many of them. Overall it was a fun read, something to kill time with.
