a little too cheeky with the fourth wall breaks. i knew who the killer was very early on even though i didn’t have the motive 100% correct. still kept me engaged throughout, so that’s good! i don’t think i’ll be picking up the other books in the series.

Decisamente migliore del primo. La storia mi pare più avvincente e meglio calibrata fra mistero, avventura e ironia.

Ernest Cunningham is back, this time as part of a panel of writers in a literary festival that's taking part on a train journey and, once again, he finds himself in the middle of a murder mystery.

It's best if you read this after the first book but it works fine as a standalone too (I had actually forgotten much of the details of the the previous book though I do remember enjoying it just as much). Ernest has a self-deprecating style of narrating and the chummy manner in which he addresses the readers makes the book a fun and delightful read.

At times it feels like there are way too many characters (this is definitely one of those books that needs a list of characters to refer back to) but as you keep going and manage to eventually keep track of who's who, it becomes less of an issue. The mystery moves along fast, and often reminded me of Agatha Christie's Poirot books, especially the part where Ernest gathers everyone together for the big revelation. It was a well plotted mystery and kept me guessing, and despite Ernest's sincere assurances that he won't resort to the methods mystery writers use to fool their readers, there are definitely some sentences that are worded in a way to make you suspicious but eventually ended up being red herrings, quite cleverly done.

Though the issues with the publishing industry were addressed in a satirical manner in this novel, it nevertheless provides an additional depth to it and succeeds in drawing attention to said issues.

It was overall an entertaining, well executed mystery/thriller and I can't wait to read the third book.

Full 5 stars. I liked book two of the series a bit more than book 1. I really enjoyed the dialogue the narrator has with the reader throughout the story. Adds a fun twist to the read. I wish this series was longer, but I get why it can’t be haha. Really really enjoyed this read, and the casual take on the ‘whodunit’ genre. I did not guess the killer correctly.
