I read this book for the first time way back when I was in junior high. It was one of the books--along with books like The Outsiders--that made me feel like I was really moving into more adult oriented reading.
I found it very amazing that although the book was written a year before I was born and therefore was outdated in some aspects--lack of cell phones/computers, a young character who was a Vietnam Vet--the overall storyline still held up quite well.
Interestingly enough, I've found out that Ms. Duncan is in the process of updating her older novels to reflect the current times. I am so curious as to how this will change the overall storylines.

Three stars for content, one for nostalgia.
Also, original version, not the 2010 updated version.

I am one of the few of my generation who hasn't seen the movie. I know it's a horror film, and according to my husband it's a quintessential 90s horror film at that. Teens running around, being murdered or some such.
The book manages to be lacking in any sense of horror. It falls short as a thriller. The writing is mediocre. The one place it excels is being a quintessential 90s teen book. It definitely transported me back to high school, when the world around you was small and therefore the acts in the book would be considered scary/creepy.
I wouldn't read it again, but it's a quick time filler so I'll give it a 3 over the 2 I would be rating it if it was geared toward adults.

A group of estranged friends, a deadly secret and a summer to remember. When mysterious letters pop into the mailboxes of four teenagers, they’re reminded of a terrible accident they were involved in the summer before. The past is coming back I haunt them, can they stop it before it’s too late?

I feel like everyone knows the movie at this point, but I had only just found out it was a book. I love reading books that cult films were based on. This was a fun, quick little read.
I wish it was more suspenseful, but I chalked it up to know the movie well. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I had fun with this book.

I got creeped out reading my planned vacation book, so I finished my nostalgic read for July a few days early.
A few weeks ago, I found myself in Walmart and stumbled across a copy of Lois Duncan’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” I love love loved Lois Duncan’s books when I was in middle school. I can even remember where and when I read this one for the first time (the copy I had was the awful movie tie in version that I borrowed from the WPL).
I won’t lie. This reread was fun and quick. The publisher had Lo Dunc revise it in 2010 to include cell phones and GPS, which made the nostalgia feel kind of hilarious because it didn’t quite work. I’ve heard the same thing said on the podcast Teen Creeps (the Lo Dunc eps are always highlights for me). The story never suffered from it though. As cheesy as parts of it felt, I could really recognize what resonated with me when I was a kid and read it for the first time. In fact, it wasn’t until I started writing this that I realized that she was one of the first mystery/thriller writers that hooked me and for that I’ll forever be grateful.
So this ones to you, Lois Duncan. Thank you for fostering my love for the strange when I was a strange preteen. Your writing has had a really impact on my love of mysteries. #reading #loisduncan #readingchallenge #nostalgia

An enjoyable quick read. Not amazing, but not awful. Not super likable characters with some robotic and unrealistic dialogue.
