If you want horror, pass on this. If you want a fun, easy to read mystery - read it! Don't expect it to be anything like the movie.
I went into this book not knowing anything about the movie. I just wanted a summer thriller, and it seemed like a perfect fit considering the name.
This book was written in the 70s and revised in the 2010s to be during the Iraq War Era instead of Vietnam. It's subtle changes from the original, it seems.
Considering this was written with 70s thinking in mind, a lot of the thoughts of the characters will be outdated (mainly sexism & fatphobia mentions).
The book itself was a super easy read and I finished it in two days. Could've easily made that one day if I had the time (slow reader, here).
I actually did like the characters and all their contrasts. I liked figuring out what was going to happen along with them and clicking my theories into place towards the end.
If you want a super easy summer thriller, I do recommend it. It's a fairly easy book to read, and I'm guessing therapeutic to write as well considering the authors own family history I read about in a Q&A at the end of the book.

medium-paced
I appreciate this book more as an adult than I did as a middle school kid. Duncan does a great job with thriller books, building suspense without adding in gimmicky horror or scandal. This is the perfect short thriller, even though the plot twist is pretty expected.
As a MASSIVE fan of the 97’ slasher film, I found out was loosely based on a book and I couldn’t be more excited. Loosely is putting in lightly, they’re are barely any similarities other than the character names and the premise of a hit and run, everything else, was completely different. There was zero suspense, zero tension, zero character development, no murders. Everything just fell flat for me, it’s not often the movie is better than the book, and maybe it’s the sheer nostalgia that’s shifting my perspective, but it just fell super flat for me.
