Yes, I saw the movie before I read the book, but I knew who Lois Duncan was, as I'd already read Daughters Of Eve and Killing Mr. Griffin and loved them. I really enjoyed this one too. I understand Lois Duncan was very upset at the movie version - but what was she expecting? Plus, the movie didn't seem to stop her from continuing to sell the rights to her other books!
The plot twist here was great - I didn't see it coming at all.
Spoiler
In the book, two characters turn out to be the same person, but there's no way to translate that to film! I enjoyed the movie as a throwback to 80s style horror, and the Sarah Michelle Gellar chase scene is a ripper! The scene with Helen in the book as she tries to escape the killer was tension-filled too!The plot twist here was great - I didn't see it coming at all.

Oh my GOD I literally almost just gave up on this with 30 pages left it was so fucking stupid.
First of all, every character sucked. Like was I supposed to sympathize with these teenagers that were drinking, driving, and killing a child? Cause they deserved everything that happened. All of their parents sucked, siblings sucked. Every supporting character sucked.
All of it was devastatingly predictable and fairly lacking in action. Like I think the most exciting moment in the whole book was Barry getting shot (which he deserved, the FUCKER).
I haven’t actively hated a book in a while but this was just so shitty I’m pissed I spent time on it. I’m so glad they took liberties with the movie to make an actually compelling narrative with sympathetic characters because Lois Duncan is cracked if she thinks she did that here.

I enjoyed it. Listened to the audio, would have been better to read it, as I think I would have preferred to "hear" the charters "voice" as I would have heard them in my head. Rather than the narrator reading everything. Makes me want to go back and watch the movie lol.
It was okay way different from the movie I loved these books in elementary school so I am loving rereading them
