A nice supplement to the Shades of Magic series with arresting images and a breakneck speed story. The world building is condensed in typical graphic novel style and is sadly absent of any explanation of the magic system. Without knowing the world through the novels, a new reader wouldn't understand or be able to appreciate the magic infused into the images (what I believe is the most striking feature of the work). For a fan, a look into Maxim Maresh's back story is just FUN, and I hope that the further I get into the series, it'll give clarity to his cryptic bravado and the futile sacrifices he made in the novels.

Great addition to the Shades of Magic universe — gave more background of Maxim Maresh, a character I went from neutral on in the first book, to actively disliking in the second book, to being rather impressed with in the third book, back in his days where he earned the moniker the Steel Prince. More chance to see the world of Red London before the era of Lila Bard and Kell and Rhy Maresh is always appreciated, and I’m excited to read the other graphic novels in the series.

This was a solid first volume of comics! The artwork was absolutely incredible and I like the idea of a prequel because Maxim always had these mysterious stories about him in the original trilogy and I think its pretty cool to see more of him being fleshed out in a comic. I’d definitely going to continue reading the series because this volume was very entertaining.
