A unique way to tell a story. This is my first time reading something like this. Filled with interesting vignettes related to travel being an out of body experience yet feels like one's travel journal at the same time. You know, the ones where the writer's mind and body wanders and create stories out of the things they saw in their journey. A lovely and very insightful read for me.
dnf 30% of the way through :( I don’t think I’m smart enough for this novel & I might have to pick it back up later, I think

Stories of travel, of finding the right place and the right time or moving forth just for the hell of it. A deliberation of the mind and the body, and a questioning of death and the bodies physical and spiritual ability to remain after death. This book was written with every angle and perspective taken into account constantly questioning and diving deeper into a phenomenon. Each story caused you to question the last and brought you even deeper into this longer narrative of travel.

Unwieldy and labyrinthian, after loving drive your plow I unfortunately had a hard time connecting with this one. Very dense, both in terms of ideas and the actual prose, it was hard to follow at times and very oddly paced. There were sections I found quite moving (letters to my amputated leg, kairos, the explorations of individual characters amongst the historical themes and narratives) and there's enough great stuff here that I don't regret reading it but fairly often I found this one tough to chew on and honestly a bit of a slog. I don't know, I think she's clearly a great writer with a lot of thought provoking ideas but I struggled to see the brilliance reflected in the average rating for this one.
This isn't really a traditional novel, but something like a scrapbook of different stories and musings. They all focus on travel and the body (anatomy, the aging body, death). Some of the stories were mere enjoyable than others. I probably liked some of the short pieces the best, the short musings on fellow travelers or place. This is, like so many other books I've been reading lately, a book that takes some time and effort to get through. I liked a lot of it, but don't expect a traditional storyline, characters, or plot with this book.
