read for the tarot readathon 2025: the high priestess (read a book with a mystery element)
read for summerween 2025

this was such a satisfying but emotionally intense conclusion to one of my favorite series of all time. being back with pip and these characters felt like coming hom even though this book immediately makes it clear that pip is not the same girl we met in book one and honestly she shouldn't be. after everything she’s been through watching her navigate the trauma and lasting impact of the violence she experienced was so compelling and handled with so much care.

this installment definitely takes a different turn than the first two books and while i know that shift might not work for everyone, i really appreciated it. it felt necessary. the stakes are higher, the darkness is deeper, and pip is more raw and complex than ever. there’s this creeping sense of dread that builds so well and i was totally hooked the whole time.

the only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars for me is that as a series finale i wish we’d gotten just a bit more closure. not everything needs to be tied up with a bow but there were a few emotional threads i wanted to see resolved a little more clearly. that said i think holly jackson knew exactly the story she wanted to tell here and she told it powerfully.

i’ll be thinking about pip’s journey for a long time.

This book was amazingly well written (as all of Holly Jackson’s books are); however, I must admit that I hated the storyline for the second half of the book.

I can understand Pip killing Jason tbh, but more in a way that even though she was getting away, she may have still feared for her life. The whole cover up story felt so wrong, I can’t imagine Pip doing that, and I find it hard to believe that Ravi and all her friends were willing to help. With the amount of evidence that she had that he was the DT killer (the DNA in his car, the duct tape with her DNA on it, and the trophies Jason had) I don’t understand why she wouldn’t go to the police. Even with a lack of trust for them, with that amount of evidence surely you’d think the police can help?

ALSO breaking up with Ravi? That broke me. I’m glad in the end they got back in contact, but with her reasoning for covering up the murder being that she wanted her normal/happy life back, it would have been nice reading more about her actually getting to live that life.

Phenomenal!!. Loved the series very much. It made so much sense and explained where it all had begun. All the characters are so well written and described. Andie's helplessness wrecked me. The amount of trust and support cara, naomi, nat, Jamie, connor has towards pip are goals. Stanley's story ruined me completely. Charlie's way of dealing justice and lifting pip when she's low is wholesome. Pip coping with her anxiety, ptsd, trauma and still not giving up against max tells us how strong she is. Max and Jason at the end deserving the crimes they committed. Becca and Dawn finally get their freedom but at a cost of andie and almost pip's life. Daniel admiring Jason as a father figure but realising he's been used. Sal does not deserve an end but did steal us by his kindness. Not to forget our sunshine boy, Ravi!!! He has flaws but knows how to deal with them, been a supporter of pip from the beginning, has always been there for her, always reminded her potential. Team Ravi and Pip forever

Enjoyed the first half of the book but the second half honestly kinda ruined the series for me. I was planning on reading the novella after but I lost interest in Jackson's writing after this insane half of a final book.

personally, i wouldn’t feel bad if i killed jason and framed max but idk.
