I LOVED this book.
Kyle McCray’s dad has had a major medical incident, and Kyle is asked to return home to Potsdam, New York, for the first time in over two years. You know from page 1 that he is a good guy—so why did he leave his beloved wife, his dad, and the mechanic shop he lovingly built from the ground up?
This book has everything I adore:
🥅 Flawed but deeply lovable characters
🥅 A delightful underdog sports team (hockey in this case—some good Beartown vibes here)
🥅 An imperfect but beautiful love story
🥅 Poignant moments of both grief and joy, leaving me a sobbing mess at one point (any book that does that to me gets an immediate five stars)
I would happily read another thousand pages about the McCrays’ lives because they became so real to me. ❤️

What Happened to the McCray's? is my third book by author Tracey Lange. Kyle McCray heads back to Potsdam, NY after 2 1/2 years away to help his father recover from a stroke. There he will have to deal with the fall-out of his abrupt departure. Told in a series of "Then" and "Now", both Kyle and his ex-Wife Casey give all the details of the unraveling of their marriage. This book will be published on January 14, 2025. Pick this one up if you love family dramas!
Thanks to NetGalley and Celadon Books for the advanced digital copy of the book.

If a book makes me cry actual tears, there’s a good chance it’s going to land as a 5-star read. The way Tracey writes about the brokenness of her characters is just phenomenal. You will be invested. The character development all around was rich & there was a good amount of suspense that had me eagerly turning the pages.

A wonderful, emotional read about family, grief & healing. I’d recommend not reading too many detailed reviews on this one if you haven’t read it yet. Let Tracey do the telling on What Happened to the McCrays without too many spoilers. Definitely recommended for those who enjoy character-driven fiction.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is my favorite Tracey Lange book. I’ve also read her debut, We are the Brennans (3⭐️), and her second novel, The Connellys of County Down (4⭐️). This book has landed Tracey as an auto-read author for me.

Lange evidently has a gift for storytelling and I was so engaged with the ebb and flow of emotions throughout this book. Featuring an arguable top ten literary pup, Star you shine bright in this story, perhaps though not as strongly though as our main characters who I found real and loveable.
