Not the best book by the author. I understand that it was published a long time ago, but I didn't love when the "sex" scenes are based on rapey behavior.
If she says no, that means no. If she isn't sure, that means no.
The only thing that means yes, is an enthusiastic yes.
Another thing that bother me was the whole "skink like a child's". I don't like that even a bit.
How about we don't compare adults who we would like to sleep with children? I know it's crazy, but just think about it! It's a red flag if a man compares you with a child, or wants you to express qualities that are related to children. That was weird, and I gave it a pass because it was published a long time ago, and I'm reading it with a 2021-mentality.
Aside from that, it was a meh story. It was interesting enough that I read the first half in a day, but then it got a bit boring. I liked the characters, and the plot was unique, but the last bit was a bit messy and dull.
If you want to read it, go ahead, it's a good read for a weekend (I read it this weekend).
I liked that the author touched on topics such as domestic abuse, how women were very vulnerable, and how the problem was ignored by society, set aside as something to be solved behind closed doors. I liked that in the end, everything work out fine, not in a tragedy as much of these situations end up. What is tragic was that I watched the stats for my country and around the world about the topic of domestic violence, and we're not that better. It's better, but we should have been able to end violence against women a long time ago. It's sad that this still happened in this century, and it's infuriating that there are people who are enabling the situation by ignoring the signs or completely dismissing women when they come for help (insert police officers). I'm leaving on that because I'm getting heated.
As always I loved the writing style, this is one of my favorite authors for sure (and maybe because of that this whole review is biased, and perhaps that's why I didn't DNFed the book, and probably this boosted the score a bit).

2021:
Honestly this is like my 4th or 5th time rereading this book and still 5 stars. I just love the way Hunter loves Lara so fiercely. Some of my favorite, most romantic quotes in romance are in this book. I will be recommending and rereading this book until the end of time.

2019:
The first book I read by Lisa Kleypas and it will always be a personal favorite and if anyone says they enjoy historical romance, I recommend this book. When I turned the last page of this book I immediately went out and bought every book of Lisa's I could find and ever since she has been a favorite author of mine. Don't wait! Read it!
