I'd actually give this book 3.5 stars if I could. It's really easy to get into, but I was a bit disappointed with the ending.

If you are planning on reading this book, I'd keep a few things in mind. First, it's not really one you can read a few minutes at a time while other things are going on around you. It takes a lot of attention to get the important details and clever descriptions out of the text. The author loves descriptions and will throw them at you in the middle of conversations, so you need to have your brain ready to think like that. If you're a smart person with good focus, it's a pretty good detective story. If not, it's confusing, overwritten, and a slow burn. I think it's worth sticking with, but I'd probably only recommend it to someone if I knew they liked heady reads with a side of Jewish history.
This is an enjoyable detective novel. Chabon's writing is rich in mood and language - very noir. The first half or three-quarters of the book are more engaging than the last, which brought my overall rating down from 4 stars. I did like the book, though. It has great use of language, and an interesting plot. The ride to the end just wasn't as fun as the climb to the peak.
I found it very hard to get into this book and often felt that I had to push myself to get through it. Nothing about the main storyline or characters were particularly compelling to me, although they were also *just* interesting enough to convince me not to abandon the book. Overall, I feel neutral about this book: it was fine, nothing more.
