not as good as i had hoped, and strange and confusing towards the end, but still: nothing warms the heart quite like a hard boiled detective novel in a fictional alaska.
I don't love detective mysteries, so perhaps this was an uphill battle for me, but I barely made it through this book. The language was too dense with yiddish for a goyem like me to get into the rhythm of the prose, which was frequently a florid as the Alaskan landscape was bleak. The story meandered and pays off it seemed disconnected. It didn't draw me into the search for the murderer, but cheeky like it dragged me along like the kid brother that no one really wanted there in the first place. in the end, I just didn't care what happened to the characters, and felt a bit like the author didn't either.
What a weird time to be reading this book.
Michael Chabon is the type of person who sniffs his own farts, but dammit if he can't write an interesting story. It's a fun premise and has an interesting take on the feelings of Jewish diaspora and the true evil it takes for people to be a Zionist. The first half of the book is slow but it really picks up and becomes a page turner half way through.
I would def recommend it to those who love an interesting mystery or crime story. But woah what a weird one.

Complex mysterious plot line interwoven with metaphor that can really make you think. Although the book did take a few meandering turns along the way, the main mystery and story is, ultimately, very satisfying.

Beautifully written with engagingly flawed characters and an interesting premise, this neo-noir alternative history is delightful.
3.5 a little slow in the beginning and kind of an anticlimactic ending, but the writing is quite special.
