3 hours - I read this book for the first time years ago, and I absolutely loved it. And now, rereading it, I still loved it. I love the premise, I love the metaphors, I love the characters. I believe this was the book that got me into reading Ness' works actually. My only issue is the ending feels a little too abrupt compared to the rest of the book. I would have loved just one extra scene or chapter, even just repeating the opening scene again, although I understand that the open-ending is there for a purpose. I love that this book doesn't tell you what is real and what is not, what is metaphor and what is happening, I just love this book.

I really loved the characters in this but wish I could've got into the plot more. At first, the vagueness about the circumstances of the characters created a really great atmosphere but it became frustrating the more I read. I didn't like the overall concept too much but some of the descriptions of the landscape were amazing, as well as some of the smaller moments such as the characters sat in the supermarket or the scene with the boar. I didn't feel this book lived up to my expectations, however, it wasn't a bad read and I finished it in only 3 sittings.

'We have to lie to ourselves to lives. Otherwise, we'd go crazy.'

For the amount of twists and turns in this novel, the ending is unsatisfying and doesn't deliver. The book is written in a simple way, yet when you think you know what is going on, you realise that you truly do not know what is going on. Seth is a greatly flawed character, but equally the reader feels empathetic for him and his circumstances. He experiences great growth and learns the true value of the place he is in. The world is crafted so articulately and readers are drawn in and can't put the page down.

This is undoubtedly one of the slowest, most confusing books I’ve ever read. That being said, I like what Ness did with this novel. He created complex characters and an intriguing world where literally nothing is as it seems. You never know exactly what’s going on, and for every answer you get, there are at least five new questions.

While the intrigue was maintained, I won’t lie: sometimes, the slow pacing was off-putting. However, the desire to know what the fudge was happening paired with the extremely short chapters kept me reading. I also quite liked Regine and Tomasz.

Thank you, Erika, for pushing me to read this for the last couple of years. I’m glad I finally did. More Than This is better than the Chaos Walking trilogy, even if half the time, I had no clue what was real and I never knew what to expect. Now I can recommend it alongside you. It’s a twisted story, but one that’s worth the read.

Representation
  • queer protagonist and side character in a m/m relationship (occurs prior to the story and in flashbacks)
  • Black fat side character

I just felt nothing really happened. It picked up in part 2 and 3 but part 4 just felt rushed and too ‘convenient’, the ambiguity just didn’t really make me excited. Not what I expected!
