So you'd think that I would absolutely LOVE this book considering it's James Rollins and vampires, right? Well....

There was just SO much in this book I don't know where to begin. The story was amazingly portrayed, lots of action scenes, but after awhile I felt it just droned on. Like let's write it up guys....

First time reading a book in large print by the way, and the only reason was because I didn't want to wait to get the regular copy from the library, I wanted it now.

There was a lot more gore in this novel than in any other novel of Rollins'. I did not like the parts where they were fighting with the bear, Ursa. Not usually his style to go into the hurting of animals.

You could totally tell that the "love scenes" in this book were not done by Rollins. I don't know if I like this pairing of authors. I've never read her, but it feels like whatever she contributed could have easily been pulled from any other author who wrote vampire books or looked up on Wikipedia.

I liked it, I liked where it could lead, but there was just too much in between-ness from the boy Tommy and what was happening with the "main" characters. Usually Rollins flips back and forth more often. I have a feeling that was due to this second author being the writing portion of it that a lot of his ideas got cut.

Also, this is the first of his novels that I was able to comfortably set down for more than 10 minutes...that should speak volumes.

Bottomline: Want more, craving more, but ditch the second author. She's holding you back, Rollins!

I am a huge fan of James Rollins and was excited for a chance to go down a different path with him. I've never read anything by Rebecca but the two complimented each other well and most of the transitions were smooth. There were a few spots that it stuttered and it was obvious that the person writing had changed. This book had me hooked and on the edge of my seat until the last 50 pages and then it all fell apart. I was torn between a 3 or 4 rating and went with a 4 just out of loyalty to James.
The book has it all history, fascinating locations, fast paced action and vampires! What could go wrong? Well, rushing to get to a stopping point and leaving something for two other books may be the wrong. The book flowed so well until the end and then the wheels came off. The twists didn't feel right, the stopping point seemed sudden and contrived and the characters went hollow. I'm hoping book two rights the course but I'm just not ready to test it.

Oh my goodness, I was a little daunted by the length of this book but it was a fast read for 700 pages. I do wish I had book 2 on the shelf. Now I have to wait to see where this story goes. I took this one off my TBR list only to need to add more.

I enjoyed it, the book is fantastic up until very near the end where I believe it fumbles a bit.
I don't think that a love triangle should've been introduced and then, seemingly, abandoned so quickly and easily. The chemistry between Erin and Jordan was enough for me to make the book interesting and I felt like there was enough baggage between the two of them sufficient for a proper romance arc without adding complications with Erin and Rhun's feelings for each other surface.
The very, very end though is great! Introducing three new characters with some interesting implications for even greater story in the following books.

With this book I feel like I was hoping for Dan Brown but got Stephenie Meyer.

Wasn't so sure who was writing which bits or if James really contributed that much.

The style was different than most of his other books and wasn't that compelling. It started off great, died down from Part 2 to mid 4 or so. I enjoyed the ending, though.

Overall, its a pretty quick read. I wouldn't judge Rollins on this one; but it could definitely be improved. I enjoyed most of the characters except for the Jordan. He was uninspired.
