Sometimes laugh out loud funny, sometimes haunting and moving to tears. This is an excellently written book. Each character has a strong inner world and I love Mick Herron’s ability to paint that world for us. I enjoyed each character’s arc. Hassan’s, River’s and Catherine’s especially. I look forward to watching the series. After a spell of working on certain scenes within episodes, I thought it was about time I got acquainted with its world.

For some reason I was expecting a lighter book of a group of f-ups who blunder their way to relevance. Instead I found out that Herron wrote a serious book (with moments of wit and humour) that actually falls squarely into the more serious Spy novel genre. I really enjoyed it.

The first in a series of books about British espionage, set during one day in present-day London. We follow River Cartwright and his fellow "Slow Horses," those in MI5 who make a career-altering mistake and we sent to Slough House. The action is fast-paced and the story is compelling, but at times difficult to follow the entire cast of characters. I am definitely looking forward to reading the second in this series.

Quite an enjoyable espionage thriller with supposedly washed-up spooks and realpolitik at the front. There's more books in the series and I'll think I'm gonna check out the next one.
