I have no idea why this book cover is the promo poster for the musical. I was a huge fan of the musical when it first came out, which led to me reading the book. While the basic premise is the same, they should be viewed as two separate beasts.
The broadway musical has the music, the sensuality, and the repeated musical themes (oh Webber, you should have used a more varied approach) and the book has the mystery and intrigue. To say the book goes into way more detail than the musical would be an understatement. We see more about the guts of the Paris Opera and the traps and booby traps Erik laid so his lair would not be easily found.
It may sound like I don't like the musical, but that's not true. If you're wanting entertaining musical theatre, see the musical (the movie version is horrible. Can we have a moment of silence and forget it was ever made). If you liked the musical and you want to read more mystery and depth to Erik, pick up the book.

The writing is lovely, and the story is so original, like I know, its been 10000 years since it was written so ofc its "original", but I mean all the things the phantom does, and his house, the traps, the idea of it all, its so gooooood.
The Persian was the best character, can't change my mind.
