Couldn't finish it... It didn't catch my attention enough even after passing mid book.

All I did while reading this book is cry. The author writes with simplicity that still conveys and makes you feel the raw emotions of the characters. I enjoyed how all of the characters are fleshed out, with their own hopes, dreams, and struggles- her mom, dad, jaunga, Lorena, her other family members too. I connected to every character and I felt for them, I cried for Julia like I was her. A big part of that is I did see a lot of similarities between me and her when I was a teenager, despite leading very different lives. It’s a gift when a storyteller is able to make you feel and connect with people who are very different than you. I love the themes and the message of this book, and I would recommend it to EVERYONE!
slow-paced

There wasn't any clear plot. Everything was just scattered everywhere and there were just a bunch of different problems that were difficult to piece together. I didn't really understand how many of the things connected to Olga. I thought that this book was all about finding out the mystery of Olga but instead it kind of turned into a novel about a girl's insane life.
Other than that, the dialogue in the book was amazing and you can really experience the character's emotions throughout the book. I say that the beginning was very good in terms of plot, explaining, and overall left me pretty satisfied. Towards the end it felt like the author had a bunch of great ideas and wanted to just stuff them in one book. Maybe instead of just having a bunch of stuff going on, focus on one of the problems and just make it into a series and a detailed timeline.
They also kind of left out the dad out towards the end. I mean the mentioned it quite a few times but overall he was just the person who used to be an artist but now just lazily sits on the couch and words at a candy factory.

When Julia went to Mexico, that part had absolutely no purpose. I feel like Ama should have just told Julia what had happened instead of her going all the way to Mexico to ride horses and whatnot. It would have developed a better mother-daughter relationship.

I think I stumbled into a YA novel without realizing it. Appreciated the Mexican context, obviously, but the main character was a little immature and kind of annoying.
