I wish I had this book as a teenager. Julia feels trapped by a life that isn’t what she would choose—a sister who’s recently died in a tragic accident, living without the money and resources she’s exposed to in different parts of the city, her grieving parents, and secrets abounding within her family. Definitely a more mature YA book, but such an important one that shows the unique struggle of teenagers who reckon with the pretense of independence and their newfound dreams and sense of self.
Hard to read at first but then developed the character and was a knowledgeable read
Wow. This book was so beautiful. Julia’s story was heartbreaking yet the ending left me with so much hope. I loved all the elements of the book from Olga’s mystery, to Julia’s romances with Connor and Estaban, Julia’s depression and anxiety, and the theme of immigration. All these aspects wove together to create an impactful story. I highly recommend to anyone, I could not put this book down.

One way of knowing you're getting older for real is if you read YA and you find yourself really sympathizing with the mother character.
