some interesting commentary on patriarchy but i didn't really enjoy this and felt frustrated by the end. very little exposition and development, a bit too fast paced

Wow. Best book of 2024 by a long shot. This was so amazingly concise but evocative. I don't even want to write too much because it wouldn't do it justice. I cried my eyes out reading this.

I actually enjoyed this until the last 20 (10?) pages. And now I just feel lousy.

This is a clever, often very funny novella, but I think I'm going to end up in the small minority that prefers The Shape of Water, which is one of the stranger unconnected adaptations of all time. This one is witty, the satire is often sharp, and the idea well-formed, but it's really hard to argue that it goes anywhere in particular. Sometime about the middle, having plumbed all manner of clever ideas, it switches over to plot and ends with an ending that even I saw coming. It's certainly the kind of book you should be glad to read anyway, and parts are pretty close to brilliant, but it probably could have been more.

I found so many similarities between this book and The Shape of Water. I loved the film and I loved this book! It had great pacing and seemed very ahead of it’s time. Definitely recommend reading this one!
