Oh, how I've missed this series and all it's beautiful darkness. Though the demon remained absent for most of the story, coming out as a surprise near the end, the entire book was a roller coaster of emotion, suitable given that the most important element of this story wasn't just about stopping another Withered, but about the relationship between John and the thousands of personalities trapped inside Brooke. Every interaction they had was deep and heartfelt, and there were more than a few scenes pulling at my heartstrings. The demon they hunted this time was challenging and dangerous, and I definitely liked its mechanics. The writing itself was amazing, and John's progression as he deals with feeling emotions is nothing short of spectacular. While not my favourite in the series, it was a fantastic read and really packed a punch at the ending. I need more!

Something needs to happen in this new John Cleaver trilogy. I love the characters and the overall idea but this book felt like a filler. There's so much hitchhiking and needless details that lead nowhere and just aren't important in the end. I wish there were more of an overall arc or background story for the books. Technically there is (John hunting down all the Withered) but this just feels like one adventure after another and I'm not getting any new pieces for my puzzle. Sure, John and Brooke go through some changes but it's not enough. I need a more gripping storyline. It took about 2/3 of this book for the villain to become apparent, before that it was just useless drifting. I know that kind of reflects John and Brooke's current way of living but it makes for a boring book. Sorry to say, I hope the final book makes everything explode in deliciously twisted ways.

Kind of a filler novel? I feel like we could’ve ended the series by now.
