I’m on such a short story kick. I enjoyed this, it is very reminiscent of Ecclesiastes. All is vanity, everyone dies, everything disappears, success doesn’t matter, materials don’t matter. Money and struggles aren’t as significant as you think. Be a good person for tomorrow you die. Everything, even our great philosophers and novelists will fall to dust.

A fascinating study on the lifespan of human sanity, knowledge, and commitment to truth.
I too wouldn’t care about money any more if I was locked in a cell for ten years

My son chose this for a short story assignment at school so I picked it up.
Like all the best short stories it leaves so much to think about in so few words.

A very short but clever story depicting a different perception of freedom.

I’d read this as a child, I’d read this as a teen and I’ve reread it as an adult and my perceptions each time have been different… never knew it was written by Anton Chekhov (or perhaps I never knew him as much to have remembered before)

So good! If you haven’t read this, it’s well worth it! It’s really short but Chekhov sure knows how to get you thinking. If you want to ponder the lessons taught in the Bet, I would recommend listening to Classical Et Cetera’s recent podcast discussing it.

“I myself have experienced neither capital punishment nor life-imprisonment, but if one may judge a priori, then in my opinion capital punishment is more moral and more humane than imprisonment. Execution kills instantly, life-imprisonment kills by degrees. Who is the more humane executioner, one who kills you in a few seconds or one who draws the life out of you incessantly, for years?”

A guy who holds somebody prisoner in their house for 15 years over a bet, someone who would have willingly smothered a person to get out of said bet; would not have had such a visceral reaction and change of heart over a letter. That banker is not crying because he feels remorse and guilt. Those are tears of joy because he didn’t have to cough up a million dollars. Change my mind.

a great short story!! 4.5/5 stars

the writing is lovely and there's so much symbolism.
the surface idea represented of solitary confinement is fascinating, and i could talk about that all day, but perhaps even more so is the idea of knowledge vs. wisdom vs. experience and how they all relate.

truly a wonderful short story and i completely recommend it ❤
