Read the first 100 pages and the last chapter. The characters feel shallow, too much pathos going on for me and nothing/noone really mattered to me in all of this. The last chapter was good but doesn't make me want to fight through 300 pages in order to see how they get there...

While I still loved this book, it didn't hit as hard as "The Gilded Ones" did.
Let's talk plot first; the main downfall of this book for me. The change of pace was a bit jarring. There are battles and suspenseful moments pretty much one after another with very little time in between. I do think overall, the plot succeeded. However, some moments felt unrealistic (in the sense of contrived.) Deka unravels new power after power seemingly making her almost invincible. The same can be said for other characters, though I won't go into too much detail. It lowered the stakes a bit. This book focused much more on the dynamics between the gods and humans. I overall enjoyed the direction it took and I loved the exploration on gender. I also enjoyed the unraveling of the lies and deceptions. I was very invested to see how everything turned out.
The characters were all pretty strong in this book, as they were previously. Some characters though, fell flat for me. Kieta, for instance, was barely present, emotionally speaking. I felt like everyone else developed well and became a stronger character that I could love more, but I just can't say this for him. Same with some of the other uruni; they didn't feel there.
I loved the inclusion of diverse genders, as well as more queer and trans people. There was quite a lot of queer/trans characters in this book as compared to the previous one which isn't really a problem to me personally, as this book definitely explored queer themes very well. The onnly problem I had with this was when Karmoko Thandiwe revealed that they prefer they/them. On the very next page, they were referred to as "she" twice and then it went back to "they". It just kinda grinds my gears when it seems like an editor didn't actually read the book over.
Still a fantastic book, but felt duller compared to it's predecessor. I didn't know this was going to be a trilogy and I see the next book will be out next year (or end of this year?), so I am excited to read the conclusion.

OMG this book definitely gave me some twists and turns. I did not expect any of these plot twists to happen. Book 1 pulled you in with these magical beings that are being mistreated but truly powerful. Then you get to book 2 and they are embracing their powers and fighting for equality against whoever and I mean whoever stands in their way.
