What a great coming of age story, that takes a look at racism, anti-muslim sentiment and finding one’s path. There are a lot layers in this and some storylines that would be great to see developed more. I look forward to reading more by Private Huq

Even though Nisrin’s decision to wear a headscarf happens at the beginning of the book and happens fast, the reader catches up to the emotional journey she is on as a Begladeshi-American girl whose family does not practice Islam. It’s a complex issue because her Grandpa thinks headscarves are left over from an invader culture (Pakistan) and mom and Grandma don’t wear one. The best part of the book was Nisrin’s project about Bengladesh. I learned so much. If a bit uneven, this is an important purchase.

“Everyone hates me.”
“Do I hate you?
“…No”
“That’s right. I love my favorite granddaughter.”

My best friend Viola bought this book at Barnes and Noble and we read it back to back! It’s so good. I love the art, I love the message. Good representation of ptsd and religion!! One of the characters is Mexican and my friend said she reminded her of me! Very cute!

Are there places that could use more fleshing out? Yes. Is there a lot of subtext that will need discussion for upper elementary and even middle schoolers? Yes.

Is this book worth the effort? Yes. Absolutely 100% yes. These are the stories that our students need to be interacting with, and wrestling with.

3.5 stars. While I loved the artwork and the message, the story felt disjointed at times, as if it skipped certain details or jumped from thought to thought.

Overall, a really nice middle grade graphic novel.
