Not my usual genre, but a fun stretch! Some parts were a bit dry for me, as a very casual Star Wars observer, but when it was good, it was really good.

“Yub, yub, Commander.”
So many fond memories from when I first read this as a teenager in the 90s, and I still enjoy the ensemble of characters; the humor/friendship between Wes Janson and Wedge Antilles (the Ewok pilot candidate joke). Admiral Ackbar’s niece. Piggy a Gamorrean lab-rat who is a mathematical genius. Face, the former child holodrama star. Ton who is essentially a cyborg because he’s allergic to bacta and had so many body parts replaced. This first book is more of a set up; not all the characters are fully developed before some get killed off, though a few have moments. More like Ocean’s Eleven in space; they’re a team but not equal screen time.

Unlike the first arc of the X-wing novels, where I knew that certain members of Rogue Squadron would definitely survive thanks to reading books later in the timeline, I had no idea about any of the members of Wraith Squadron going into this book, which certainly upped the tension for me. I was also surprised by how emotional the book got in places.
Definitely my favourite book of the X-wing series so far!
