Okay, I know everyones complaint about this book is how rascist and old fashioned it, how her treatment & views of the natives is horrible & pure colonialism at its finest BUT:
I truly believe that those thoughts (which are 100% valid) can be put aside to appreciate her story telling and her love of Africa. This shows an Africa that existed only for a short while and is a unique experience.
She is an excellent story teller, a keen observer. I read this book along side "The Piano Teacher" which makes me appreciate the multi facets of women.

It’s just so beautiful. This is my second time with the story. My first time listening - as the author says, storytelling and listening are uniquely wonderous. I agree. The details and descriptions create a tapestry. I treasure this and recognize my experiences have different meaning to the story this time. I hope I’ll read it again someday and wonder what I’ll feel then.

A difficult book to get into. However the writing is very descriptive which I enjoyed.

FINALLY finished. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories or journal entries rather than a tale with a definable plot. Much of it was interesting, but the old writing style put me to sleep, and with no plot intrigues to push me forward I trudged through this novel at a sleepy pace indeed.

I really wanted to like this. And it had beautiful writing, but the pace was just too slow, and there weren't any real characters to follow. Especially the writer. For something from her point of view, there was nothing of herself or her feelings, so I had a really hard time getting involved.

one of the few instances in which i prefer the movie to the book.

While reading the first chapters of the book, I kept thinking I do not understand the hype of this book....that is until I got to the last chapter of the book. Wow. It really builds and you feel attached to her life in Africa and the well being of the farm. Not sure how to write a review for this one without spoilers.

Beautifully written. Just read it. Probably going to go watch the movie now.
