I just reread this after more than twenty years and had to knock it down to three stars. It isn't the cohesive whole I remembered. Maybe the film I love so much tainted my memory of it?
The prose, however, remains quite beautiful - coppery and luminous in the fading light of day.

Once again I wish goodreads had half stars, because three doesn't seem enough and yet I don't want to give it four either.
The book certainly leaves a big impression. After having seen the film adaptation a while ago, I expected it to be quite different, but I suppose it's a good thing that it is written the way it is. Even though the lack of linearity takes some getting used to, it reflects the rhythm of Africa very well (at least I imagine it does) and it really is a touching story.

I really thought this was going to be a five star read for me and while I still liked it a lot it just didn't turn out to be an all-time favourite of mine.
From the first pages I immediately felt taken back to the landscapes of Africa - I have travelled the continent extensively myself - and I loved the book for that. I could smell the African air that is so special and see the plains and trees and hills that I have smelled and seen myself again through Karen’s nose and eyes and I loved the book for that. However throughout it I felt kind of disconnected from the author which was really what made it not perfect for me. For me it felt as if she would narrate from the outside when she was really very much at the heart of things on her farm. Only in the end, when she described leaving her land and the country to go back to Europe I could really feel her pain and it almost made me cry.
Overall still a great book and a very enjoyable read.

Just not getting on with the way this is written and the author’s views
Read 2/3. Couldnt finish it! The language is just unbearable to read, no flow at all!
