Jesus I’m so glad to be done this book. I took a much-needed five month break between the first two thirds and the last third because it’s just so dense. It feels like reading a spreadsheet but like, an important and persuasive and deeply depressing spreadsheet. Journos should definitely understand the first chapter. The rest is kinda dated. I’d think there are both better examples of the propaganda model in today’s information ecosystem and better texts to read to understand the policies of maniacal genocidal American empire-building.

This book is great at showing that the US media is a well-oiled propaganda machine, but it doesn't sufficiently show how it works. The first chapter goes into the why and how, but the rest of the chapters, focused on real examples from the news, are mostly about news reports (what comes out) and not about news reporting (what goes on inside). I would have loved to see more of that, so that I can also consider how relevant these considerations are in the media of other countries - to me, most importantly, my own.
