Overall this book was so so good. I always recommend people who want to read Fredrik Backman’s books to go in blind. His books always have secondary plot points that make the book so much more interesting and develop the characters so much. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars was I wished there was a little less detail on hockey (I know that’s one of the biggest parts of the book but at some points it seemed a little excessive) and the ending was not as satisfying as I would’ve wished but I think that was kind of the point, it was realistic I guess. This book has something for everyone. Something for teenagers, parents, and everyone in between. I am usually staunchly against second-person present-tense writing, but it is clearly an intentional choice on Backman's part and only serves to enhance the tension and mood of the book. As a writer, I tend to read books with a critical eye, but I had very little to criticize about Beartown. I found myself fully immersed in the world, not being suddenly thrust out by flaws in the way the book is written. A very good story that is very well written.

This is a tough one to review. I feel like I should rate this higher simply because I do agree that it is an important read but the truth is, I just didn't think that it was particularly well executed. The characters were very two dimensional and considering what the book was trying to comment on, I was disappointed by how little page-time the victim was given.

I could have put this down at any time because it just wasn't engaging to me. I actually preferred Britt-Marie Was Here, which is one of Backman's lower rated books on goodreads, because the characters in that novel were fully fleshed out and it was edited in a way that made it succinct, whereas Beartown could have been at least 100 pages shorter.

I own the sequel and I'll probably give it a try at some point but I doubt whether I'll finish it.
