twee enough to feel like a couple steps above a Hallmark movie in some places. Backman’s writing style isn’t my favorite; he tends to grind his themes into a fine dust with repetition, but he writes intriguing narratives and characters. at times the dialogue feels hokey, while sometimes it comes across as intensely genuine, which I believe comes back to the sheer amount of repetition. if Backman never once asked you what a community was, what a parent’s responsibility was, or what a hockey town was like, I’m confident you would’ve been able to sort it out on your own.
